Carter Vintage Guitars

The history of the shop

Walter Carter, former historian for Gibson and the author of a dozen books on vintage guitars, and his wife Christie Carter, who worked for a a prominent vintage guitar dealer for 25 years, started Carter Vintage Guitars in their living room in 2012. They opened their store in June 2013, just a few blocks from downtown Nashville.

What makes your shop unique?

Carter Vintage was founded on the concept of bringing the atmosphere of our living room into our business. Customers are welcome to try out everything in our huge inventory of over 1400 guitars, basses, amps, mandolins and banjos. There’s a friendly staff, plenty of comfortable seating, and liquid refreshments available.

Why is Tone King important to your shop?

Carter Vintage is primarily a vintage store. The only new lines we carry are those that match the quality of the best vintage pieces. Tone Kings offer top-level performance, aesthetics and value — a combination that appeals to our vintage customers. And Tone Kings are our go-to amps for anyone trying out a vintage guitar.
